Trainings

We learn much more quickly when we learn through play – just like when we were young children.  Our experiential learning games are a fully immersive experience, include themes, props and music to create a fully experiential experience.

One of the best ways to explain this style of learning is through the movie the Karate Kid, where the Karate Kid learns his martial art through a series of tasks including sanding the floor, painting the fence and waxing the car (the experience).  The Karate kid does not realise that he is learning his martial art however when put to the test proves the learning has gone deep and has fully integrated the learning.

The key here is that the karate kid is training his skills by doing tasks over and over.  Repetition is one of the keys to skill development – however repetition is often boring.  This is why we create games and themes around this training – so that it is fun and enjoyable.  Each training can be repeated over and over, and new lessons and distinctions are learned as the student improves.  The process is very similar to training to be an elite athlete – except we are training your kids towards mastering life.

Course Outline

The Gathering is an Experiential games based course.  Students don’t just get “taught” concepts and lessons, they play highly immersive games to experience the lessons.  These games are designed by The Dream Initiative and are not available anywhere else in the world.

The games are imperative so that students can see what it is like to not follow the lessons & fail.  To see what it is like to follow the lessons and succeed.  So they see for themselves why the lessons work.  So they can learn to make mistakes and learn from them.

Overview

TG - Process

Day 1: Smart Decision Making

Learning to be Flexible

In life things don’t always go our way.  Hanging on to wanting to do things a certain way, or to have a certain outcome is more often than not much more challenging and stressful than just going with the flow.

Risk Vs Reward

How to understand the risk involved in making a decision vs the rewards of the same decision.  How do our choices change under pressure, or with peers around.  Students learn the consequences of taking more risky decisions around peers, or when under pressure & emotional.

Considering Others

Everyone says they consider how others feel when they are making decisions, but do they really?  Students learn how just having a joke, or playing along with friends can be devastating to others.

Day 1 Games:

Big Top Choices, Future Foundations, Mission: Farus

Day 2: Courage

Overcoming Ourselves

Quite often, we are our own worst enemy.  We quite often see ourselves in a worse light than is actually true.  Students learn how to identify this, and take control of it so that we see ourselves as strong, powerful and capable of anything.
Overcoming Challenges
As we grow up, life throws us challenges.  Students learn to identify the challenge and discover ways to overcome it.
Developing Self Belief
Fear, Shyness, Self Doubt and their friends can all get in the way of achieving what we want to achieve in life.  Students learn how to battle these demons and defeat them once and for all.
Day 2 Games:
Pure Magic

Day 3: Working with others

Teamwork, Communication & Leadership

Day 3 is dedicated to developing teamwork, communication & leadership skills.  These skills are critical in real life, and often are the difference between the good and the great.  These skills are complex and hard to master & require actually doing the skill to learn it.  We create an environment so your kids can test out different ways to work as a team, communicate with each other and test out leadership skills they didn’t even know they had inside them.
Day 3 Games:
Deal Estate, Pedal to the Metal

FAQ

Q: What age students do you work with?

A:  Typically we work with 12-16 year olds, however these games will work for students from 7-18.  If your child is outside the 12-16 range, please contact us (info@dreaminitiative.com.a0 and we will be able to advise if this program is right for your child.

Q: Where is the event held?

A: It held in Adelaide.  As you can understand, the security of your child is very important to us.  Venue details are only released to parents upon registration for the course.

Q: Adelaide? When will you run one in <insert my city name here>?

A: This style of training doesn’t go on the road easily.  We have trunks and trunks of gear just to run a single 3 day course.  What we do is a little bit more involved than a laptop and a powerpoint presentation.  You can imagine taking all this on flights is costly and takes us away from getting students actually in our events.  Plus, we’ve always wanted to keep the costs of our courses to be as low as possible – that’s why we’re based in Adelaide.  We’re unlikely to run courses in other states in the near future.

In all seriousness though, sometimes you just have to travel to get the best education, and to get your needs met.  We travel around Australia 30-60 days a year to get the best education (which in turn improves our courses).  We’re incredibly appreciative and damn lucky that our global mentors even run events in Australia.  If you have to travel to come to our course – do it.  It will be worth it.

Q: What are the dates for the event?

A: Contact Us For Event Dates.

Q: How much is it?

A: $980 per child with additional siblings prices at $480 per family member.

Q: Do parents need to attend?

A: No, however parents will need to drop their children off and pick them up at the end of each day.

Q: Can parents attend if they want to?

A: Due to the style of this course, we do not allow parents to attend. This is so they can experience the training on their own and without the influence / watchful eyes of their parents.  If you have concerns around your child being in the course by themselves, please contact us: info@dreaminitiative.com.au or 08 8266 7965

Q: Do your trainers and crew have working with children checks etc?

A: Absolutely.  All of our trainers have working with children checks as well as have completed mandatory reporting training.  Our crew have also had working with children checks, and in addition to this, our crew are people that we have known personally for many years.  We screen our crew thoroughly to ensure the safety of our students.

Q: My child is shy, has low self esteem, low confidence, ADHD, etc etc etc

A: This course is PERFECT for your child.  We have worked with kids with autism, ADHD, deafness and they can all thrive in this games environment.  If you have concerns or special needs, please contact us: info@dreaminitiative.com.au

Q: What should I tell my son or daughter about the course?

A: Tell them they are going to a 3 day course to help them in the areas you want them to develop.  Tell them it is because you love them and want the best for them.  It is not because they are broken, anxious or <insert problem here>(even if they are).  Tell them it will be fun and all they have to do is show up and give everything a go.

You can also show them this video:

Q: How can I contact  you?

A: You can either call us: 08 8266 7965 or email us: info@dreaminitiative.com.au.  We’ll be happy to answer your questions.

Course Outline

Torment To Triumph is an online program designed to help teens who are having some challenges in their life work through them and give them the knowledge, skills and resources to work through their difficult times.  It is an online course that the child can work through at their own pace, or with a parent.  This program is based on Trudi’s extensive life experience.  There’s not much she hasn’t seen and experienced before.  She’s taken all of the best tools she has used to overcome significant emotional events and trauma.  Tools to relieve the pain, learn the lessons of the past and to move forward.

It also includes a highly specialised coaching program where our highly trained coaches are individually selected and matched to your child and their challenges.  If your child has worked with counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists and has not seen the results you were after, this program is for you.  The coach works intensely with the child for a period of 12 months and parent sessions are also provided.  This program is also ideal to use in conjunction with an existing counselor or psychologist.

Overview

TTT - Process

Module 1: Brain Works

The first step is to acknowledge the way we are feeling.  One of the worst things you can do when in a difficult situation is to tell them (or ourselves) to “get over it” or “stop being such a drama queen”.  We feel the way we do (both good feeling and bad) for a reason – and it is important to acknowledge those feelings, not just ignore them.

The Brain Works module is designed to teach your child a little about how the mind works with respect to the challenges many teenagers face these days.  When in tumultuous situations things may seem out of their control and random.  By beginning to learn how our mind works and processes thoughts and feelings we can begin to understand our actions.  We can then learn to change our thoughts and thus change our feelings & actions.

Module 2: Language and Programming

Every day we are bombarded with language, beliefs and opinions.  Much of this comes from our own inner self-talk.  Module 2 is about learning how language can easily affect and change our beliefs and opinions.  Many people are unaware of this and are constantly putting themselves down and programming themselves for sadness, depression and failure.  Music is also a key driver of emotion and this is also covered in this module.

Module 3: Gratitude and Meditation

When things are going wrong in life it is very easy to get stuck in focusing on the negative.  With all the things going on it is very easy to get sucked into all that.  Module 3 is about learning how to ground ourselves when things get crazy and to always remember how good we actually have it.  Remember if you live in a house and you have food to eat you are better of than so many people in the world right now.

Module 4: Triggers and Strategies

In life things can seem exceptionally random and we can be not quite sure why things are happening to us.  In reality though, when we dig down into all the things that cause us grief there is often a common element or process.  Module 4 is about identifying what things in our life trigger us to feel certain ways and what strategies we unconsciously do in order for those triggers to happen to us.  By identifying these triggers, we can be on the lookout for them.

Module 5: 5 Power Questions

When things are happening around you and you notice things are going wrong, it is easy to get on the emotional roller coaster and before you know it you are a mess.  Module 5 is about learning the 5 power questions that lets you press pause on your emotional autopilot so that you can make a choice about how you want to react.

Module 6: Friendship Circles

So the first 5 modules are very focused on our internal thought process and how we think when certain situations come up.  Module 6 looks at our circle of friends and our environment.  This process teaches you to look at your environment and identify friends who are being supportive and also friends who are being not supportive of the changes you want to make.

Quite often it can be the closest in our circle of friends who are dragging us down without us even knowing it.  This process helps you identify your true friends vs your superficial friends who don’t really care about you at all.

Module 7: Exploring the Shadow

Motivation is defined by how important things are for us.  Important things, or things we value, are called (funnily enough) – values.  However when most people talk about values and things that are important to them they will often speak of “golden” or “fluffy” values.  These are values that they think are important to them, but actually they just want to be seen to have that value by others.  What really drives us is “shadow” values.  These are the values that nobody is willing to admit they have.

When we can identify shadow values we can begin to understand what it really is that drives us to do the things that we do.  By being able to see the shadow values in others we can see how bad behaviors in others are actually just that person fulfilling their shadow.  This module lets us actually be honest about what is important to us, and we can learn to use that to motivate ourselves.

Module 8: Hitting the Target

Once we’ve worked through all the hard stuff and the challenges, it’s time to look towards the future and starting to set down a plan.  Module 8 is about identifying our future goals and laying down a plan of attack to achieve those goals.  This is an ongoing part of the coaching and is supported by techniques learned in the other 7 modules.

Testimonials

Before I started working with Trudi I was suffering from suicidal thoughts, self harm, self hate, an eating disorder and depression. Once we started talking I learnt tactics to stop myself from self harming and am currently getting over my self hate. My depression hasn’t been as bad as it was before and it feels like it’s slowly slipping away. I believe this has something to do with Trudi’s advice and strategies that she has provided me with.

Now, after only working with Trudi for a few months, I feel like there is a future for me and I will be able to conquer these illnesses. I can now be put through difficult situations without resorting to self harm. She has given me hope and support through tough times and has been an excellent role model. JA 15 years old

Q: Do you advise parents about what you talk about during the coaching calls

A: As a general rule, no.  There has to be a level of confidentiality between the teen and the coach so that the teen can be open and honest about issues and the things that are challenging them.  However, the coach will ALWAYS notify the parent if they thing the teenager is at risk in any way.  This is discussed and agreed with both the parent and the teen to before any coaching commences.

Q: How many coaching calls do the parents get?
